There, a thousand-year-old fox spirit took possession of her. Under Daji's face, the fox became the king's favourite, drove him to legendary cruelty and brought down an entire dynasty, before fleeing to India, and much later to Japan, where she would become Tamamo-no-Mae.\u003c\/p\u003e\n \n\u003cp\u003eKuniyoshi stages the fateful night with thrilling intensity: the enormous white fox, eyes glowing and golden tail blazing like a flame, looms over a court attendant who grips a short sword, in a palace room dense with peonies, brocades and swirling patterns.
