Hiroshi Yoshida, the traveller of shin-hanga
Japanese artist Hiroshi Yoshida (1876–1950) began as a Western-style watercolour and oil painter. He travelled to the United States as early as 1899, exhibited in Detroit and Boston, and kept travelling all his life. In the 1920s he turned to the woodblock print and became one of the great masters of shin-hanga, the "new prints" movement that renewed the ukiyo-e tradition with Western light and perspective.
Unlike most shin-hanga artists, who worked through a publisher, Yoshida founded his own workshop in 1925. He supervised every carver and printer himself, and his prints carry the jizuri seal, meaning "self-printed".
Sailing Boats: one image, six moments of the day
Yoshida's signature idea was to print the same set of woodblocks in different colours to capture changing light. His Sailing Boats series (1926), from the Inland Sea views, exists in six versions, from morning to night and mist. Hung side by side, two or three of them make a striking wall gallery.
Our Hiroshi Yoshida reproductions
Each print is restored from an ultra-high-definition image (colour calibration, dust removal) and then printed on thick, archival-grade matte paper. Sizes are available in inches and centimetres to fit standard frames; see our size guide. Margins can be customised on request.
