Tall coconut palms lean over a sandy shore. In their shade, a man in a yellow tunic sits beside a tray of fruit and cakes, while a woman in a red floral sarong rests on a log, a coconut in her hands. Chickens wander between fallen nuts; behind them, a wooden house stands on stilts above the water, and a sailing boat waits offshore. Yoshida captures the slow rhythm of a hot afternoon in 1930s Singapore, in a palette of soft greens, warm reds and pale blues.
The print was born from Yoshida's journey through India and Southeast Asia in 1930–1931, which inspired a whole series of prints far from his usual Japanese landscapes. The left margin carries the red jizuri seal ("self-printed"), the date and the place name in Japanese, while the bottom margin bears the pencil title "Singapore" and Yoshida's signature.
Japanese artist Hiroshi Yoshida (1876–1950) was a master of shin-hanga, the "new prints" movement that renewed the ukiyo-e tradition with Western light and perspective. A tireless traveller, he brought back prints from the United States, Europe, India and Southeast Asia.
