Hiroshige — Hara: Mount Fuji in the Morning | Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō

Utagawa Hiroshige's Hara: Mount Fuji in the Morning (原 朝之富士) is the thirteenth station of his masterpiece series The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō, first published by Hōeidō around 1833–1834.

It is the only print in the series in which Mount Fuji breaks through the upper border of the frame — a deliberate gesture by the artist to convey the sheer scale of the sacred mountain as travellers first glimpsed it across the Ukishima marshes. Beneath a dawn sky graded from deep crimson to pale blue, two women in indigo kimono and broad straw hats walk a raised path with their porter, while a pair of red-crowned cranes lifts from the reed beds and a flight of geese crosses the snowfield.

Considered one of the most poetic winter landscapes of the ukiyo-e tradition, the composition balances quiet human scale against an immense, luminous horizon.
