Skating on the Frozen Canal – Anton Pieck

The whole town is out on the ice. On a frozen canal, a man in a top hat pushes a woman in a sleigh shaped like a swan, a dog trots along on its leash, and dozens of skaters criss-cross the ice. On the bank, a windmill and the houses of an old Dutch town complete this joyful winter scene.

Anton Pieck drew the old towns of the Netherlands in winter with a love of detail that has made his images synonymous with nostalgic Christmas: the snow on the roofs, the bustle of the streets, the small scenes hidden in every corner.

Why it works on your wall

• A nostalgic Christmas: perfect for a living room, an entrance or a child’s room during the festive season
• Full of details: an image you can look at for a long time and keep discovering
• Framing tip: a warm wood frame suits its soft, wintry palette; hang it alone or as a set with the other two scenes
