Drawn from the Histoire naturelle des oiseaux d'Afrique (1799–1808), this portrait of the Black-headed Blue Jay — a bird with vivid blue plumage contrasting with a jet-black hood, likely an African corvid or roller — reflects Le Vaillant's fascination with strongly contrasting colour schemes. The naturalist dedicated many pages to these bicolour species whose distinctive silhouettes caught his eye in the open scrubland of the Cape.
The deep blue of the plumage, rendered using the hand-applied colour engraving technique of the period, represents one of the most demanding technical challenges for contemporary colourists. Rigorous and decorative in equal measure, this plate stands among the finest in the entire work.
