Rows of moths and hawk-moths, laid out like a collector's drawer. This antique natural history plate arranges dozens of specimens in neat lines, each one with its name written underneath in Dutch and Latin. Browns, creams, soft pinks and greys on an aged paper make it a quiet, elegant piece.

Why it works on your wall

A cabinet of curiosities look: perfect in a study, a library or a hallway.
Neutral, warm tones: it goes with wood, leather, linen and green plants.
Framing tip: a black or dark wood frame emphasises the scientific, museum feel.

The plate

Before photography, naturalists relied on engraved and hand-coloured plates to describe and compare species. Plates like this one were made to be studied: every wing is drawn to show its pattern, and the specimens are grouped so that related species can be compared at a glance.

Subject: moths and hawk-moths, with Dutch and Latin names
