A Korean dragon coils through storm clouds, reaching for the flaming pearl that will make it all-powerful.

In Korean folklore, the dragon (yong) commands the rain, the rivers and the sky. But its true power lies in the yeouiju, the wish-granting pearl you see blazing before its face. Legend says that only a creature holding this jewel can rise to the heavens. Here, the dragon twists through the clouds, eyes wide, claws open, just a breath away from its prize.

A painting of good fortune

This unryongdo ("dragon in the clouds") belongs to minhwa, the folk painting of the Joseon era. At New Year, dragon paintings were hung on gates to bring rain, abundance and protection, often paired with a tiger on the other side.
