Emperor Bird-of-Paradise, François Le Vaillant

Published in 1806 in the landmark work Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux de Paradis et des Rolliers, this plate of the Emperor Bird-of-Paradise — Paradisaea guilielmi — is widely regarded as one of the most breathtaking natural history illustrations ever produced. Its creator, Jacques Barraband (1767–1809), was the foremost bird painter of his era, supplying designs to the Sèvres porcelain manufactory and the Gobelins tapestry works.

The accompanying text was written by François Le Vaillant, the great Enlightenment explorer-naturalist, who entrusted Barraband with bringing his field descriptions to life. From this collaboration emerged an image of unmatched precision and grace: the male in full display, his long wire-like white-gold plumes cascading outward against a lightly sketched tropical setting.

This high-fidelity reproduction captures all the luminosity of the original watercolour: the brilliant yellow of the nape, the emerald green of the throat, the silk-like quality of the flank plumes.
