Evening in Beppu (1929) by Kawase Hasui (1883–1957), master of the Japanese shin-hanga movement. Kawase Hasui was, above all, the great painter of Japanese nights — and Evening in Beppu is one of his finest.

Beppu, on the island of Kyūshū, is Japan's most famous hot-spring town, built on a valley of steaming rivers and boiling springs. Hasui shows it at the moment the light fails. A narrow stone-edged path curves away from us along the riverbank, its pale cobbles the brightest thing in the picture. To the left, the dark eaves of an inn; to the right, a wide bed of rounded boulders with a thread of water running through. Two winter trees, entirely bare, spread their fine black branches across the whole upper half of the sheet like cracks in glass. Beyond, the hills of Kyūshū rise in flat layers of deepening blue.

And then the lanterns: a dozen small squares of orange and amber strung along the far bank, marking the inns and bathhouses. They are tiny — a few millimetres each — and they carry the entire emotional weight of the image. Everything else is blue: teal, slate, indigo, midnight. The warmth is somewhere over there, on the other side, where people are.

Technically, this is the shin-hanga movement at its peak. Hasui and his printers used layered blue blocks and hand-graded bokashi washes to build a night that has depth rather than darkness — you can see into it. The bare branches alone required carving of extraordinary delicacy.

Hasui designed close to a thousand prints over nearly forty years of constant travel, sketchbook in hand. In 1956, the Japanese government named him a Living National Treasure — the first printmaker to receive the honour. He died the following year.

Styling Suggestions

A deep, calming blue that reads almost as a neutral — this is one of the easiest statement pieces to live with. Black frames sharpen it; pale oak or walnut warm it up. Exceptional in bedrooms and quiet corners, and striking against white, deep green or clay-coloured walls. Pairs naturally with other Hasui night scenes for a two- or three-print wall.
