Goddess Kali – Raja Ravi Varma, Hindu Art Print

Blue-skinned, four-armed and fearless: Kali at her most powerful. The goddess stands on the body of Shiva, a sword raised in one hand and a severed head in another, a garland of heads around her neck. A golden halo frames her face, and the deep blue of her skin stands out against the warm background.

In Hindu tradition, Kali is the fierce form of the goddess who destroys evil. The legend says that Shiva lay down in her path to calm her fury: when she stepped on him, she came back to herself. It is this moment that the image shows.

Why it works on your wall

• A strong, graphic image: blue, gold and red make a bold statement in a living room or a study.
• A meaningful gift for anyone interested in Indian art, yoga or spirituality.
• Framing tip: a gold or dark wood frame echoes the halo and the jewellery.

The artist

Raja Ravi Varma (1848–1906) is one of the most celebrated Indian painters. He combined European oil painting techniques with Hindu mythology, and in 1894 he founded a lithographic press near Bombay to print his images of gods and goddesses. Sold cheaply and in great numbers, these prints brought sacred art into ordinary homes all over India.
