View of the Haarlemmerpoort in Amsterdam – Albertus Brondgeest

A winter’s day at the gates of Amsterdam. Under a heavy grey sky, a man wrapped in a cloak walks through the snow with his dog towards the Haarlemmerpoort, the city gate on the road to Haarlem. Its tower and spire rise above the snowy roofs, a bridge leads across the water, and behind it a windmill turns its sails beside the masts of ships. On the right, a wooden shed and a pile of planks frame the scene, while a few birds cross the clouds.

The gate shown here is the old Haarlemmerpoort designed by Hendrick de Keyser and built in 1615-1618. It was demolished in 1837 and replaced in 1840 by the gate that still stands today. Albertus Brondgeest drew this view in pen and black chalk, then washed it with watercolour in soft greys and browns that capture the damp cold of a Dutch winter. The original sheet is kept at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
