About this print
Created in 1934, Asama Shrine in Shizuoka depicts the Asama Shrine in Shizuoka Prefecture, dedicated to the deity Asama-no-Okami, believed to protect against disasters — particularly volcanic eruptions, as Mount Fuji lies nearby. It is early autumn when the first blush of color touches the treetops. A profound quiet is broken only by the fluttering of birds overhead as shadows spill into the shrine's entrance, marking the way for visitors.
Part of Hasui's Selected Views of the Tokaido Road series, this oban-format print (38.8 × 26.4 cm) was published by the legendary Watanabe Shozaburo, the driving force behind the entire shin-hanga movement.
Kawase Hasui (1883–1957) was one of 20th-century Japan's most important and prolific printmakers, designing nearly one thousand woodblock prints over a career spanning almost forty years. Towards the end of his life the Japanese government recognized him as a Living National Treasure for his contribution to Japanese culture.
