Late Autumn in Ichikawa — Kawase Hasui (1930)

Silver pampas grass by a quiet river at the end of autumn. In the foreground, tall pampas grass with silvery plumes sways along a curving riverbank. The turquoise water leads the eye towards a wooded island, where a few white sails rest by the shore under a clear blue sky crossed by thin clouds.

Pampas grass (susuki) is one of the emblems of autumn in Japan, associated with the full moon and the end of the year. Ichikawa, east of Tokyo, was then a quiet countryside along the river, a place Hasui knew well and painted with great tenderness.

Why it works on your wall

• Soft and luminous: golden and turquoise tones for a living room, a bedroom or a hallway
• A seasonal favourite: a peaceful autumn landscape that works all year round
• Framing tip: a natural wood frame suits its warm golds

Kawase Hasui

Kawase Hasui (1883–1957) was the leading landscape artist of shin-hanga, the movement that revived Japanese woodblock printing in the 20th century. Working with the publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō, he travelled all over Japan to sketch quiet places at dusk, in rain or under snow, and was named a Living National Treasure shortly before his death.
