Summer light and shade on the stone steps of a temple. Kawase Hasui looks up the stairs towards a red gate, the sunlight filtering through the trees in bright patches. In the background, a woman in a kimono shelters under her parasol: a quiet, hot afternoon in Tokyo.

Why it works on your wall

Warm and luminous: red, green and sunlit stone brighten an entrance, a hallway or a living room.
A vertical format: perfect for a narrow wall or a staircase.
Framing tip: a natural wood frame echoes the temple architecture.

The print

Meguro Fudō is the popular name of Ryūsen-ji, a temple in the Meguro district of Tokyo dedicated to Fudō Myōō, a protective Buddhist deity. Kawase Hasui (1883–1957), the leading landscape artist of the shin-hanga movement, loved these everyday scenes of temples and streets, which he drew from life before handing them to the carvers and printers.
