Tea House in Azalea Garden | Hiroshi Yoshida | Japanese Art Print

A sandy path leads you in, between great old trunks. Ahead, a small tea house waits in the shade, and all around, the azaleas are in full bloom.

In spring, Japanese gardens erupt in azaleas (tsutsuji), and simple tea houses welcome walkers who come to admire them. In 1935, Hiroshi Yoshida captured one of these peaceful moments: a few visitors under the veranda, the soft light of a misty day, and mounds of pink and white flowers glowing against the dark trees.

A master of shin-hanga

Hiroshi Yoshida (1876–1950) was one of the great names of shin-hanga, the revival of the Japanese woodblock print in the 20th century. Trained as a painter, he brought Western light and atmosphere into the traditional technique and supervised every print himself. He signed many of his sheets in pencil, in English, for his collectors abroad, and you can still see the title and signature in the margin.

Look closer

• The massive trunks in the foreground, framing the scene like the pillars of a gate.
• The visitors in the shade of the tea house, and the banners hanging from its eaves.
• The azaleas, built up in successive layers of pink, coral and white.
• The misty sky, where distant trees fade into blue-grey silhouettes.

In your home

Its soft pinks, warm sand and muted greens make it a gentle, luminous piece for a living room, bedroom or hallway. It looks lovely in a natural oak or light wood frame.
