At the center sits a magnificent tiger, drawn in thick black ink with dense, rhythmic stripes that turn his body into pure graphic pattern. He stares straight out at us, eyes wide and round, whiskers bristling, tail curling into a perfect spiral — every inch the king of the mountains, and yet, in the great minhwa tradition, more endearing than terrifying. He is not alone: a young tiger strides across his back, while two more prowl below, one seated, one walking with tail raised. A whole tiger clan.

Facing them, five magpies hold their ground. Two perch on the branches of an ancient pine, two swoop down from the sky, one hovers at the top — all with beaks wide open, scolding the tigers who can only stare back. In Korean tradition, the tiger wards off misfortune and evil spirits, while the magpie is the bearer of good news. Painted together, they made a talisman hung at the entrance of the home each New Year, inviting luck and protection for the year ahead. Folk tradition also reads the scene as gentle satire: the imposing tigers stand for the powerful, the small quick-witted magpies for the common people.

Look closely at the pine — the artist has hidden three cicadas on its trunk, a symbol of purity and renewal in East Asian art, and a detail that rewards anyone who spends time with the picture. The composition is completed by a poetic inscription in Chinese characters and a cyclical date, brushed down the right side.

Stripped of all color, reduced to black ink on aged paper, the work reads as strikingly modern — closer to bold graphic design than to a museum antique.
