Ikegami Honmonji Temple in Snow – Kawase Hasui

Snow weighs down the branches of an old pine above the temple steps. In this winter scene by Kawase Hasui, a few figures climb towards Ikegami Honmonji under their umbrellas, small and dark against the white. Snow falls softly over everything, and the grey sky hushes the whole picture.

Why it works on your wall

• A calm winter mood: lovely in a bedroom or a living room, and a natural choice for the festive season.
• Greys, whites and deep greens: it fits minimalist, Japandi or Scandinavian interiors.
• Framing tip: a thin black frame and a white mount bring out the snow.

The print

Ikegami Honmonji, in the south of Tokyo, is the temple where the Buddhist monk Nichiren died in 1282, and it remains one of the main centres of his school. Hasui designed this view for the series Collected Views of Japan, Eastern Japan, published by Watanabe Shōzaburō. Known as the poet of rain and snow, Hasui (1883–1957) is the leading landscape artist of the shin-hanga movement.
