Plate 307 · The Birds of America · John James Audubon · Engraved by R. Havell, 1836

Look closer at the background. In the left distance, almost lost in the marsh grasses near Charleston, South Carolina, stands a small white figure. It is the same bird — younger, not yet transformed.

This is the compositional masterstroke of Plate 307: Audubon placed the adult male Little Blue Heron (Ardea coerulea) in the foreground in the full splendour of its breeding plumage — that extraordinary deep slate-blue body, the rich maroon-purple head and neck, the pale blue bill tipped with black — and behind it, half-hidden in the reeds, the white juvenile from which it came. Two ages, one species, one painting. A lesson in natural history told entirely through placement and light.

Engraved, printed and coloured by Robert Havell in 1836, this is one of the great horizontal compositions of the entire Birds of America series — the vast double-elephant folio format used to its full advantage, the sweep of the Carolina wetland stretching into a soft peach-and-grey sky behind the bird's razor-sharp silhouette.

Our reproduction is printed on thick archival paper from an ultra-high-definition source scan, with colour fidelity calibrated to the warmth and precision of the original Havell impression. Two versions available:

🤍 White background — clean, graphic, contemporary. The heron's form reads with maximum clarity against a neutral ground. Ideal for modern interiors and gallery walls.

🟤 Vintage paper — warm cream tones that restore the aged patina of the original double-elephant folio sheets. The landscape settles into the paper as it would have in 1836. Perfect for period frames, dark academia aesthetics, or anyone who wants their print to feel like a piece of history.
