In 1802, taking advantage of a brief peace between Britain and France, the young J.M.W. Turner crossed the Channel and made his first journey to the Alps. Above Chamonix, he discovered the Mer de Glace, a vast river of ice flowing between the peaks of the Mont Blanc massif. Back in London, he turned his sketches into this watercolour, where the jagged ice and towering rock convey the Romantic sublime: a beauty mixed with fear, before which humans feel very small.
