A Gothic spire in a frame of trees

Through an arch of tall, dark trees, the soaring spire of Salisbury Cathedral rises in the light, while cattle drink at a stream in the foreground. John Constable first painted this view in 1823 for his friend's uncle, John Fisher, Bishop of Salisbury. The bishop admired the picture but disliked its dark clouds, and Constable returned to the subject several times. This version, painted around 1825, is one of the finest expressions of the English Romantic landscape: nature and Gothic architecture in perfect harmony.
