A cat with a secret

By the glowing hearth, among flowered bowls, cups and jugs, Simpkin the tabby cat, buttoned into his green coat, lifts the lid of a china teapot. From the left, the tailor's hand reaches out, waiting. Simpkin has just come home from his errands to find that his master has set free all the mice he was keeping for supper. He is furious, and the precious skein of cherry-coloured twist the tailor needs to finish the Mayor's coat is about to disappear into the teapot.

The most disgruntled cat in literature

Simpkin is one of Beatrix Potter's great characters: proud, sulky and very much a real cat, even in a coat. His little act of revenge sets the whole story in motion, until Christmas Eve teaches him a lesson. Potter painted this scene around 1902 for The Tailor of Gloucester, published by Frederick Warne in 1903, filling it with the old English crockery she had sketched in cottages and farmhouses.
