A little girl, a reindeer, and the long road north. In a forest of dark firs, deep in snow, a little girl in a blue coat presses her face against the muzzle of a reindeer, which lowers its head towards her. Behind them, the white landscape fades into a cold, misty light.

In Hans Christian Andersen’s The Snow Queen, it is a reindeer that carries little Gerda across the snows to Lapland, on her way to rescue her friend Kay from the Snow Queen’s palace. Edmund Dulac turns the tale into a scene of pure tenderness.

The illustration

Edmund Dulac (1882–1953), born in Toulouse and naturalised British, was one of the masters of the golden age of book illustration, alongside Arthur Rackham. This watercolour illustrates Stories from Hans Andersen, published in London in 1911.
