The most famous bad dream in art
A young woman lies asleep, her body thrown back across the bed. On her chest crouches a grinning incubus, and through the red curtains a horse with blank, glowing eyes peers into the room. When Henry Fuseli (Johann Heinrich Füssli) exhibited The Nightmare at the Royal Academy in 1782, it caused a sensation. Engravings spread it across Europe, and it became the founding image of Gothic Romantic art. Sigmund Freud is even said to have owned a reproduction.
