Nature's cold indifference

Great slabs of ice rise in a jagged pyramid toward a pale, silent sky. Only on looking closer does one notice, on the right, the stern of a ship crushed and swallowed by the ice. Inspired by the Arctic expeditions of his time and by the ice floes he sketched on the Elbe, Caspar David Friedrich painted in The Sea of Ice one of the most radical images of the sublime: nature immense, frozen and indifferent to human ambition. Too bold for its time, the painting remained unsold during the artist's lifetime; today it is one of the treasures of the Hamburger Kunsthalle.

With its icy blues, whites and greys, this print brings a striking, almost contemporary graphic force to a minimalist interior. It completes a Friedrich trio with The Monk by the Sea and Wanderer above the Sea of Fog.
