Kawase Hasui walked the length of Japan with a sketchbook, looking for the moment when ordinary places become quietly extraordinary. This is one of those moments.

An old wooden boat lies grounded at the edge of a river, its ribs exposed, oars still slung across the gunwale — a working craft at the end of its working life. Behind it, the water stretches wide and glassy, streaked with lavender shallows. A village of grey-roofed houses lines the far bank, half-dissolved into the evening haze. And above it all, an enormous sky, washed from deep blue at the top edge down through coral and rose, with long horizontal clouds drifting like brushstrokes.

The colour is the whole subject. Hasui's printers used bokashi — the hand-graded ink wash that gives woodblock skies their impossible softness — to carry the light from cool blue to warm pink across the full height of the sheet, and then repeated the same rose in the water below, so that sky and river become one continuous glow. The boat, in its cool greys and violets, sits inside that warmth like a silhouette.

Hasui was a leading designer of shin-hanga ("new prints"), the early-twentieth-century movement that revived traditional Japanese woodblock techniques while absorbing the atmospheric light and perspective of Western painting. Over nearly forty years he designed close to a thousand prints, and was recognised by the Japanese government as a Living National Treasure at the end of his life.

It is a picture about time passing gently: a boat that will not sail again, a day that is ending, and a light that will hold for another few minutes.
