Across the shimmering water of the lagoon stand the Dogana, Venice's old customs house, and the dome and campanile of San Giorgio Maggiore, while gondolas and sailing boats drift in the foreground. Turner visited Venice three times, and no city suited him better: everything there is light, water and reflection. Exhibited in 1834, this canvas dissolves stone into atmosphere and shows a master at the height of his powers.
