Brown Pelican – John James Audubon, Birds of America

A brown pelican perched on a mangrove branch, life-size and full of character. John James Audubon shows the bird in profile, its long bill resting on its chest and its feathers drawn one by one, among the green leaves of a red mangrove. The white background makes the silhouette stand out like a portrait.

Why it works on your wall

• Coastal and natural: ideal in a seaside home, a bathroom or a bright living room.
• Browns, greys and greens on white: an easy match for wood, linen and rattan.
• Framing tip: a natural wood frame with a wide white mount, like a museum plate.

The plate

This plate comes from The Birds of America, John James Audubon's monumental book of 435 life-size hand-coloured plates, engraved and printed in London by Robert Havell between 1827 and 1838. Audubon travelled for years across the United States to observe and draw the birds in their own setting, which gives his plates their lively, natural poses.
