Two striped tulips, an ichneumon fly and two beans beneath ornate gothic lettering. Joris Hoefnagel painted them in the margins of a manuscript written thirty years earlier by Georg Bocskay. At the time, tulips were new and precious in Europe, which makes them a fitting ornament for this luxury book.

Why it works on your wall

A precious, cabinet-of-curiosities piece: perfect in a study, a library or a hallway.
Beautiful as a set: hang several pages of the manuscript together.
Framing tip: a thin gold or black frame and a wide cream mount, like a page in a museum.

The manuscript

The Mira calligraphiae monumenta (Model Book of Calligraphy) was written in 1561–1562 by Georg Bocskay, court secretary to the Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand I, to show off every style of writing he mastered. Around 1591–1596, Emperor Rudolf II asked Joris Hoefnagel to illuminate it with flowers, fruits and insects. The manuscript is now in the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles.
