Christmas, Australian style: in the middle of summer, at the beach. On the cover of the Christmas Number of The Queenslander, 20 December 1934, Santa Claus has swapped his fur coat for a red bathing suit. Beard flying, he rides the green waves of the surf on a spotted reindeer, while a swimmer in a yellow cap bobs beside him and gulls wheel overhead. The heat has clearly got to him.

In Australia, Christmas falls at the height of summer, and many families spend it at the beach. The illustrator, who signed the cover McBain, turns the snowy northern Santa into a cheerful surfer, a joke that still makes people smile ninety years later.
