The Magic Fox of Three Countries: China (Sangoku Yōko Zue, Morokoshi, 三国妖狐図会 中華) opens the most famous fox legend of East Asia. Designed by Utagawa Kuniyoshi around 1850, this print belongs to the same series as Lady Kayō Flies to the Eastern Sky, and shows where the story of the nine-tailed fox begins.
The cartouche names the scene: Daji bewitched at the post station. According to the legend, the beautiful Daji was on her way to the court of King Zhou, the last ruler of China's Shang dynasty, when she stopped for the night at a post station. There, a thousand-year-old fox spirit took possession of her. Under Daji's face, the fox became the king's favourite, drove him to legendary cruelty and brought down an entire dynasty, before fleeing to India, and much later to Japan, where she would become Tamamo-no-Mae.
Kuniyoshi stages the fateful night with thrilling intensity: the enormous white fox, eyes glowing and golden tail blazing like a flame, looms over a court attendant who grips a short sword, in a palace room dense with peonies, brocades and swirling patterns. A masterpiece of supernatural drama, and a perfect pair with the other prints of the series.

About Utagawa Kuniyoshi
Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797–1861) was one of the last great masters of ukiyo-e. Famous for his warriors, heroes and supernatural creatures, he brought a new sense of drama and imagination to Japanese woodblock prints. His giant skeletons, sea monsters and shape-shifting foxes remain some of the most spectacular images of yokai ever created.
