Fuji from the village Narusawa — Kawase Hasui (1936)

“Mount Fuji from the Village of Narusawa” (Narusawa no Fuji / 鳴澤の富士) is a major Japanese woodblock print created in November 1936 by Kawase Hasui, one of the leading masters of the shin-hanga movement (the “new prints”). Originally published by Watanabe Shōzaburō, this polychrome woodblock print measures approximately 26.6 x 38.7 cm (horizontal ōban format).

• The foreground: The artist depicts traditional wooden houses with thatched roofs and bare winter trees at the edge of a field. This village architecture serves as a visual anchor and gives the scene a human scale.
• The background: The majestic, towering cone of Mount Fuji rises in the distance, crowned with snow, silhouetted against a pale, soft sky in pastel hues.
• The atmosphere: True to the shin-hanga technique, Hasui uses subtle gradations achieved by layering engraved woodblocks (bokashi). This creates a unique atmospheric depth and captures the effects of natural light without falling into photographic realism or pure traditional stylization.
