Story and origin
This board, titled "Nieuw Vermakelijk Ganzenspel" (New Entertaining Game of Goose), was published in Amsterdam by J. Vlieger during the 19th century. The coloured lithograph, the illustrated scenes around the board and the central portrait of a family gathered around a table make it a rare snapshot of Dutch bourgeois family life of the era.
Now in the public domain, this board can be freely reproduced. We offer a high-resolution print-ready file faithful to the original — including the Dutch rules text printed on the board itself, an authentic detail no modern reproduction could fake.
HOW TO PLAY — translated from the original Dutch rules (2 to 6 players, ages 5+)
Before starting, players agree on a stake. The player who rolls the highest number goes first.
Special first roll: if you roll 6 and 3 on your very first turn, advance directly to square 26. If you roll 5 and 4, advance directly to square 53.
Goose squares: if you land on a goose, move forward again by the same number you just rolled.
Square 6 — The Bridge (Brug): pay 1 token into the pot. If you pay double (2 tokens), advance directly to square 12.
Square 19 — The Inn (Herberg): pay 2 tokens and miss your next turn.
Square 31 — The Well (Put): pay 3 tokens and wait until another player lands on this square to free you. That player takes your place in the well.
Square 42 — The Maze (Doolhof): pay 1 token and go back to square 30.
Square 50 — The Prison (Gevangenis): pay 2 tokens and wait until another player lands on this square to free you. That player takes your place.
Square 58 — Death (Dood): pay 1 token and return to square 1.
If another player rolls the same number as you and lands on your square, they take your place and you move back to their previous position.
If you overshoot square 63: move back by the excess number of squares. If you then land on a goose, move back again by the same number.
Square 63 — Finish: the first player to land exactly on square 63 wins the game and the pot, and goes first in the next game.
