Discover one of Kawase Hasui's most intimate Tokyo scenes — Yaguchi, a quiet moment on the Tama River captured in 1928, from his celebrated 20 Views of Tokyo series.
About this print
Yaguchi no Watashi (矢口の渡し) — the Yaguchi ferry crossing — was one of the last traditional river ferries still operating on the Tama River in what is now the Ōta district of Tokyo. Created in 1928 as part of his 20 Views of Tokyo series, this print captures a Tokyo that was rapidly disappearing: wooden boats, unhurried rhythms, and the wide, light-filled expanse of the Tama River before the city swallowed the riverbanks whole.
Unlike earlier ukiyo-e artists whose landscapes typically featured famous sites, Hasui was one of the first artists to record the unknown rural places and urban corners that he found so captivating — traveling constantly, recording the scenic wonders of Japan with drawings and watercolors that became the basis for his prints. Yaguchi is a perfect example of this sensibility: not a monument, but a living corner of Tokyo that only Hasui thought to preserve.
Over thirty-five years, Hasui became a master of shin-hanga — the "new prints" movement fusing traditional Japanese art with Western aesthetics of light and the European novelty of perspective. In 1956, the Japanese government designated him a Living National Treasure.
Why this print works in your interior
The soft, hazy light over the water and the muted palette of blues and browns make this one of Hasui's most tranquil compositions — a natural fit for a study, a hallway, or any space where you want to invite stillness. The horizontal sweep of the river gives it a cinematic quality rare in woodblock printing.
