Pierre Joseph Redouté (1759-1840)
The Raphael of Flowers

Botanical Wonders
For a long time, people have been interested in plants as much for their therapeutic virtues as for their beauty. From treatises on medicinal plants to books cataloguing the natural world, we can't help but admire the diversity of forms, the shimmering colours and the infinite details that make up the enchanting world of Flora's empire.
Naturalist illustrations :
The art of depicting plants and flowers was perfected with the advent of naturalistic illustrations. Many of the illustrations in our collection come from old botanical books, herbariums or florilegia.
Johann Jakob Walther (1604 – 1676)
The man who created the Nassau Florilegium
Born in Strasbourg, France, in 1604, Johann Jakob Walther was a gifted painter, draftsman, and chronicler of his time. His artistic talents were evident early on, and he likely trained in the workshop of miniaturist Friedrich Brentel. Walther's work is characterized by its meticulous detail and naturalism, and he excelled in depicting both flora and fauna. One of Walther's most notable works is the Horti Itzeinensis, also known as the Nassau Florilegium. This comprehensive collection of botanical illustrations showcases the vast array of flowering plants from the gardens of Johann, Count of Nassau-Idstein at Idstein. Walther's meticulous renderings capture the intricate details of each plant, from the delicate petals of a rose to the intricate veins of a fern leaf.
Joris Hoefnagel (1542-1601)
The last of the Flemish illuminators
Joris Hoefnagel was a Flemish miniaturist and engraver who is considered one of the most important artists of the Renaissance. His exquisitely detailed depictions of flora and fauna, often incorporating insects and other small creatures, have captivated admirers for centuries.
Hoefnagel's most famous works are his botanical illustrations. In these miniature masterpieces, he rendered flowers, fruits, and other plants with unparalleled precision and artistry. His compositions are often breathtaking in their complexity, with a profusion of delicate petals, intricate foliage, and vibrant colors.
