Horticultural roses and nasturtium roses, Johann Walter

A rose bush in full bloom, in pink, white and fiery red. Heavy double roses in pink, white and deep crimson open among fresh green leaves, with buds still closed at the tips of the stems. In the middle, a single rose of bright orange-red stands out from the others.

That bright single flower is the “nasturtium rose”, now known as the Austrian Copper rose: its petals are orange-red on the inside and yellow on the back, a colour almost unknown among European roses. Next to the old fragrant garden roses, it was a striking rarity.

Why it works on your wall

• Romantic and generous: a classic floral image for a bedroom, a living room or a dining room
• A gift for rose lovers: a beautiful present for gardeners and flower lovers
• Framing tip: a gold or white frame enhances its pinks and its 17th-century elegance

The Nassau-Idstein florilegium

Johann Walter (1604–1677), a painter from Strasbourg, was invited at least eight times between 1654 and 1674 by Count Johann of Nassau-Idstein to paint the flowers and fruit of his garden at Idstein, near Frankfurt. The resulting florilegium served as an illustrated catalogue of the count’s collection. This plate belongs to the album of 54 gouaches on vellum kept at the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris.
