Florist's anemones, Johann Walter

A meadow of anemones in every colour. A row of anemones in scarlet, crimson, pink, white and violet rises above their finely cut leaves. Some are single, some double, and each shows a dark or blue-tinted heart. Together they form a small, joyful garden on the page.

Florist’s anemones, brought from the eastern Mediterranean, were among the great collector’s flowers of the 17th century, alongside tulips. Gardeners competed to obtain new colours and double forms, and Walter records here the variety of the count’s collection.

Why it works on your wall

• Colourful and joyful: a happy mix of red, pink and violet for a living room, a kitchen or a child’s room
• A spring garden: a fresh image that works all year round
• Framing tip: a white or natural wood frame lets its many colours shine

The Nassau-Idstein florilegium

Johann Walter (1604–1677), a painter from Strasbourg, was invited at least eight times between 1654 and 1674 by Count Johann of Nassau-Idstein to paint the flowers and fruit of his garden at Idstein, near Frankfurt. The resulting florilegium served as an illustrated catalogue of the count’s collection. This plate belongs to the album of 54 gouaches on vellum kept at the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris.
