Four flowers on one page, painted with a jeweller's precision. Johann Walter brings together a pink centaury, a spike of white hyacinth, red trumpet-shaped jasmine flowers and purple saffron crocuses. Each plant is shown whole, roots and bulbs included, against the warm cream of the vellum.

Why it works on your wall

Delicate colours: pink, purple and green bring a light, spring feel to a bedroom or a kitchen.
Perfect in a series: hang it with other plates by Johann Walter for a botanical wall.
Framing tip: a thin gold or light oak frame suits the 17th-century elegance.

The florilegium

Johann Walter (1604–1676), a painter from Strasbourg, created a celebrated florilegium for Count Johann of Nassau-Idstein: a collection of plates in gouache on vellum showing the rare flowers of the count's garden. At the time, bulbs and exotic plants were luxury objects, and such books were made to record and show off a collection.
