Plate 217 · The Birds of America · John James Audubon · Engraved, Printed & Coloured by R. Havell, 1834
There is a moment, just before a heron strikes, when it holds everything — neck coiled, weight forward, the whole body compressed into pure potential. Audubon caught it here, in Plate 217, and never surpassed it.
The Louisiana Heron (Ardea ludoviciana, today known as the Tricolored Heron) stands on the bank of a Louisiana bayou in full breeding plumage: that deep cobalt-blue body, the burgundy-streaked back, the white belly stripe and cascading grey-brown aigrettes that trail behind like smoke. The neck curves in a perfect S, the amber eye fixed on something below the frame. Behind it, a forest of palmetto palms and broad banana leaves — the humid, dense world of the American South in high summer.
Audubon called this bird "the most graceful of all North American herons." Looking at this plate, it is impossible to disagree.
Engraved, printed and hand-coloured by Robert Havell in 1834, Plate 217 is one of the most technically accomplished compositions in the entire Birds of America — the layered aquatint technique used to build the luminous sky and the deep, complex blues of the plumage with a subtlety that standard engraving could not have achieved.
Our reproduction is printed on thick archival paper from an ultra-high-definition source scan, with colour fidelity calibrated to the warmth and precision of the original Havell impression. Two versions available:
🟤 Vintage paper — warm cream tones that restore the aged patina of the original double-elephant folio sheets. The palmetto landscape settles into the paper as it would have in 1834. The blues deepen, the whites glow. This is how the plate was meant to be seen. Ideal for period frames, dark academia aesthetics, or anyone who wants their print to carry the weight of history.
🤍 White background — clean, graphic, contemporary. The heron's silhouette reads with maximum clarity against a neutral ground. Ideal for modern interiors and gallery walls.
