Ivan Aivazovsky was a Russian painter of Armenian descent who lived from 1817 to 1900. He is best known for his seascapes, which were highly regarded during his lifetime and remain popular today. Aivazovsky was born in the city of Feodosia on the Crimean Peninsula, which was then part of the Russian Empire. He studied art in St. Petersburg and became a member of the Imperial Academy of Arts. Aivazovsky was known for his ability to capture the effects of light and atmosphere on the sea, and his paintings often show dramatic and turbulent scenes. He was a prolific artist, creating over 6,000 paintings during his lifetime.
