About this print

Painted in the early 20th century, Tsuruoka Hachimangu captures the famous Shinto shrine of Kamakura — one of Japan's most sacred sites, founded in 1063 and dedicated to Hachiman, the god of war and patron of the samurai. Hasui renders the shrine in his signature style: a quiet moment suspended in time, where muted tones, soft light and meticulous detail create an atmosphere of profound calm.

Kawase Hasui (1883–1957) is widely regarded as one of the greatest landscape artists of the shin-hanga ("new print") movement, a genre that revived traditional Japanese woodblock printing techniques while incorporating Western influences in light and perspective. In 1956, the Japanese government designated him a Living National Treasure.

This print is part of his celebrated Travels to Various Provinces series (Tabi miyage), in which Hasui documented the landscapes, temples and seasons of Japan with unmatched sensitivity.
