Tsuruoka Hachiman Shrine, Kamakura – Kawase Hasui

A vermilion gate at the top of wide stone steps, and a great ginkgo glowing gold in autumn. Kawase Hasui paints the shrine of Tsurugaoka Hachiman in Kamakura on a bright autumn day: a mother and her child feed the pigeons at the foot of the stairs, a few visitors climb towards the gate, and white clouds drift across a clear blue sky.

Why it works on your wall

• Warm and luminous: gold, vermilion and blue bring energy to a living room, an entrance or a hallway.
• A vertical format: perfect for a narrow wall or a staircase.
• Framing tip: a natural wood frame echoes the shrine architecture; a thin black frame makes the colours pop.

The print

Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gū is the main Shinto shrine of Kamakura, founded in the 11th century and dedicated to Hachiman, protector of the Minamoto warrior clan. For centuries a huge ginkgo tree stood beside its main staircase, the tree Hasui shows here in its autumn colours. Kawase Hasui (1883–1957) is the leading landscape artist of the shin-hanga movement, which renewed the Japanese woodblock print in the early 20th century.
