Konjikodo in the snow, Hiraizumi - Hasui Kawase poster
A high definition print reproduction of konjikido in the snow, a Japanese woodblock print by Kawase Hasui.
"Konjikidō in the Snow" by Hasui Kawase is a woodblock print that captures the serene beauty of the Konjikidō, the Golden Hall of Chūson-ji Temple, blanketed in snow. Created in the early 20th century as part of the Shin-hanga (new prints) movement, this artwork exemplifies Kawase's skill in depicting natural landscapes with a sense of tranquility and elegance.
In the print, the golden hall, a historic and ornate structure, stands out amidst the quiet, snow-covered landscape. The falling snowflakes and the delicate layering of white on the temple and surrounding trees create a peaceful and almost ethereal atmosphere. Kawase's use of subtle color gradations (bokashi) and meticulous attention to detail in the architecture and natural elements enhance the overall sense of calm and reverence for the scene.
This piece reflects both traditional Japanese aesthetic principles and the influence of Western realism, a hallmark of the Shin-hanga movement. It is celebrated for its ability to convey the seasonal beauty and the cultural significance of the Konjikidō in a captivating and timeless manner.

About Chūson-ji Temple :
Woodblock print reproduction, from the series Nihon fukei shu higashi nihon hen (Collected Japanese landscapes: Eastern Japan), sigend Hasui, sealed Kawase, published by Watanabe Shozaburo
Chūson-ji Temple is a significant Buddhist temple located in Hiraizumi, Iwate Prefecture, Japan. Founded in 850 by the Buddhist priest Ennin, it rose to prominence under the leadership of Fujiwara no Kiyohira in the early 12th century. Kiyohira, the first leader of the Northern Fujiwara clan, transformed Chūson-ji into a major religious and cultural center.
One of the temple's most renowned structures is the Konjikidō, or the Golden Hall. Completed in 1124, this small hall is lavishly adorned with gold leaf and mother-of-pearl inlay, exemplifying the wealth and artistry of the Heian period. The Konjikidō houses sacred Buddhist statues and the mummified remains of three Fujiwara leaders: Kiyohira, Motohira, and Hidehira.
Chūson-ji is also part of the "Historic Monuments and Sites of Hiraizumi," which were designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011. The temple complex includes various other halls, pagodas, and treasures, many of which reflect the Pure Land Buddhism's influence, aiming to recreate the Western Paradise on Earth.
The temple is not only a site of historical and religious importance but also a testament to the artistic and cultural achievements of Japan during the Heian period. Visitors to Chūson-ji can experience a rich blend of history, spirituality, and natural beauty, especially during seasonal changes such as the vibrant autumn foliage and serene winter snow.
