A naughty little mouse makes amends

In her lilac flowered dress and crisp white apron, Hunca Munca sweeps away diligently with her dustpan and brush. Yet she has not always been so well-behaved. In The Tale of Two Bad Mice, published by Beatrix Potter in 1904, Hunca Munca and her husband Tom Thumb sneak into a beautiful dolls' house while its owners, the dolls Lucinda and Jane, are out. Furious to discover that the hams and puddings on the table are made of plaster, they smash everything and carry off whatever they can to their mouse-hole.

The happiest of endings

But the two bad mice are not so bad after all. Tom Thumb pays for the damage with a crooked sixpence slipped into a stocking on Christmas Eve, and Hunca Munca comes early every morning with her dustpan and broom to sweep the dolls' house. Potter based the story on two real mice she kept as pets, named Tom Thumb and Hunca Munca, and on a dolls' house built by her publisher Norman Warne for his niece.

Why it works so well on a wall

Against a soft ivory background, this charming little housekeeper brightens a nursery or a child's bedroom, but she also has her place in a kitchen, a laundry room or an entrance: a gentle, smiling reminder that tidying up can be done with grace. A perfect gift for a cottagecore home or a Beatrix Potter collector.
