In the warm half-light of a Roman tavern, a group sits around a table with their wine, and a young woman turns to look straight at us with an amused, faintly challenging expression. That gaze is what makes this painting unforgettable: it breaks the fourth wall and pulls you into the room. The Danish painter Carl Heinrich Bloch spent several years in Italy, and this scene of ordinary life, painted in 1866, was his great success on returning home.
