Every spring, crowds gather at Kameido Tenjin Shrine in Tokyo to admire its wisteria in bloom. Hiroshi Yoshida captures the moment from beneath the trellis: curtains of purple flowers hang over the steep arched "drum bridge", where visitors in kimono pause to look down at the water. Below, the bridge and its reflection close into a perfect circle, the quiet centre of a joyful, crowded scene.

Yoshida made this print in 1927 for his series Twelve Scenes of Tokyo. The date, the series title and the place name are inscribed in the left margin, next to the red jizuri seal ("self-printed") that marks the prints produced under his direct supervision.

The bridge at Kameido is one of the classic subjects of Japanese prints: Utagawa Hiroshige depicted it in his One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, and Kawase Hasui painted the same wisteria in his own Wisteria at Kameido.

Japanese artist Hiroshi Yoshida (1876–1950) was a master of shin-hanga, the "new prints" movement that renewed the ukiyo-e tradition with Western light and perspective. From 1925 he ran his own workshop, supervising every carver and printer himself.
