The rival Turner never forgot
The three spires of Lichfield Cathedral, known as the Ladies of the Vale, rise above the rooftops in a soft English light. Thomas Girtin painted this view in 1794, when he was still a teenager. He and the young Turner learned their craft side by side, copying the same drawings, and together they transformed watercolour from a modest sketching technique into a fully expressive art. Girtin died at 27, and Turner is said to have remarked that had Girtin lived, he himself would have starved.
Delicate and softly toned, this print brings quiet elegance to a hallway, a bedroom or a study.
