The myth, wrapped in silver light

Lyre raised, Orpheus leads Eurydice by the hand out of the underworld, through a wood of pale, feathery trees where ghostly figures drift. He must not look back at her, and everything in Corot's misty light says how fragile that promise is. Painted in 1861, a few years after Gluck's opera Orfeo ed Euridice had triumphed again in Paris, this canvas shows the silvery, dreamlike manner that made Corot famous, halfway between Romanticism and the Impressionism to come.
