A black locomotive charges toward us across the Maidenhead Railway Bridge, emerging from a whirl of rain, steam and golden light. Exhibited in 1844, when railways were still a thrilling novelty, Rain, Steam and Speed is one of the first paintings to capture the sensation of speed itself. Turner dissolves forms into pure color and atmosphere, decades before the Impressionists. Look closely ahead of the train: a tiny hare races along the tracks.
