The sun has just set over the Inland Sea, and the whole sky has turned pink. A sailboat rests at anchor, its small tender tied alongside, its sails now dark against the glowing horizon. Further away, other boats drift in the haze, softened by the last light. Below, the reflections stretch in deep violet across the calm water, where the pink of the sky slowly fades into lavender and blue.
This print belongs to Yoshida's celebrated Inland Sea series (Seto Naikai shū), published in 1926. For six of its prints, Yoshida used exactly the same woodblocks, changing only the colours to show the same boats at different times of day and in different weather. Of all the versions, Evening is the warmest: a single change of palette turns the scene into a sunset.
The left margin carries the series title, the date and the title "Sailing Boats, Evening" in Japanese, while the bottom margin bears the pencil title "Sailing Boats – Evening" and Yoshida's signature.
Japanese artist Hiroshi Yoshida (1876–1950) was a master of shin-hanga, the "new prints" movement that renewed the ukiyo-e tradition with Western light and perspective.
