Roman general Placidus is tracking a stag in the forest when he sees a miraculous vision of a crucifix between its horns. This miracle leads to Placidus's immediate conversion to Christianity. Dürer's largest engraving showcases his mastery of tonal values and textures, and his intense interest in the variety of nature makes finding the crucifix a kind of treasure hunt. Dürer took particular interest in the hunting dogs, carefully posing them to show five different aspects of the canine form.
